The Fleet Lagoon

The Fleet Lagoon stretches for nine miles behind Chesil Beach, a vast shallow water separated from the sea by one of England's most dramatic pebble ridges. It's a strange, haunting place - grey-green water that feels more like an inland lake than a coastal lagoon, bordered by chalk cliffs on one side and that improbable wall of shingle on the other.

What you do here depends entirely on what interests you. Birdwatchers come for the wintering wildfowl and waders; the lagoon is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and genuinely important for wildlife. Walkers use the beach ridge itself as a path, though the stones underfoot are unforgiving and the walk between Langton Herring and Weymouth is long and exposed. Photographers find the light here moody and unpredictable, especially in winter or early morning. Most casual visitors simply walk along the shore for a bit, take in the scale of it, and move on.

It's free to access, though parking near Langton Herring is limited. Allow an hour minimum if you're just looking around, longer if you're serious about the walking. Don't come expecting a prettified seaside experience - there's nothing quaint about the Fleet. It's raw and atmospheric, which is precisely why it works.

Staying at Chesil Beach Lodge Park puts you within two miles and offers the best vantage point for exploring this stretch. Haven Littlesea is also close if you want a bigger holiday park setup. Winter is actually the best time - fewer people, better light, and the birds are here.
