The Grove

Ancient oaks tower overhead as you wander the well-worn paths of this woodland stretch just outside Fownhope. The Grove is proper old-school forest walking - no visitor centre, no car park charges, just trees and birdsong. You'll find decent paths threading through mixed woodland, though they can get muddy after rain.

Families will love the space for children to roam, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep teenagers from complaining too much. Dog walkers are in their element here - it's off-lead heaven if your hound is well-behaved. The forest feels lived-in rather than manicured, with fallen logs creating natural obstacles and clearings that open up unexpectedly.

Allow a couple of hours for a proper explore, though you could easily spend half a day if you're not in a rush. Spring brings bluebells and fresh green canopy, while autumn delivers that satisfying crunch underfoot. It's free access as far as I could tell, making it a budget-friendly option when you're staying at one of the nearby spots like Caplor Glamping or Lucksall Caravan Park.

Not groundbreaking, but a solid choice for stretching legs between attractions. The Grove does exactly what it says on the tin - woodland walking without the fuss.
