Wessington Wood and Pasture Nature Reserve

The woodland here is proper ancient - you can tell by the way the oaks gnarl and twist, having grown undisturbed for centuries. Wessington Wood and Pasture is a small nature reserve just outside Fownhope, tucked into that rolling Herefordshire landscape where the Wye valley begins to show its teeth. It's woodland and open pasture mixed together, the kind of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick march through.

You're looking at maybe an hour here, two if you're the type to stop and listen for birds or sketch the lichen patterns on fallen logs. The mix of habitat - old trees, scrubby grassland, the works - means you'll spot different things depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells and bird activity. Autumn's when the mushrooms appear and you realise why fungi nerds get genuinely excited about woodland walks.

Walkers and nature spotters will get the most from this. It's not dramatic enough to thrill kids desperate for rope bridges and zip-lines, but quiet types and anyone chasing wildflowers won't find fault. Being free and open access (as most nature reserves are) means you can turn up whenever suits. The location works well if you're based at Caplor Glamping or Lucksall Caravan Park nearby - either makes a solid morning outing before heading into Fownhope for lunch, or a evening stroll if the weather holds.
