The Height

Just outside Barnsley, this unassuming peak won't set your pulse racing with dramatic vistas, but it serves up decent views across the South Yorkshire countryside once you've made the climb. The Height sits quietly among the rolling hills, offering walkers a proper workout without the crowds you'd find at more famous peaks.

Families with older children will appreciate the challenge - it's steep enough to feel like an achievement but not so brutal that anyone will be gasping for air. Dog walkers seem to love it here, and you'll often have the summit to yourself on weekday mornings. The path isn't particularly well-marked, so come prepared with a decent map or GPS.

Expect to spend about two hours for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the top. Spring and summer are best for clear views, though the exposed position means it can be properly windy even on calm days below.

If you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots like Greensprings Caravan Park or High Lea Farm Camping, it makes for a good morning stretch before breakfast. Not spectacular by Peak District standards, but a solid local walk that'll give you a taste of Yorkshire's gentler side without the tourist buses.
