The John Muir Way (East end)

The John Muir Way starts (or ends, depending on which direction you're tackling it) at Dunbar harbour, where the Scottish naturalist himself was born. It's a proper 42-mile trail that cuts through East Lothian, and this eastern terminus gives you the chance to dip your toes into one of Scotland's finest long-distance walks without committing to the whole thing.

The harbour walk itself is straightforward and scenic - you've got the sea on one side, the town's fishing heritage on the other. The trail ribbons inland from here through farmland, woodland, and moorland all the way to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish Borders. Most people don't do the full thing in one go, mind. Day walkers tend to pick a section. The first stretch from Dunbar towards Innerwick takes about four hours and doesn't demand specialist gear - good boots and a map will see you right.

Historically minded visitors get a kick out of starting where Muir did; there's a bronze statue in the town centre worth a quick look before you head off. Families with older kids will manage a few miles from the harbour without drama. Serious hikers should plan accommodation in advance if doing multiple days - Belhaven Bay Caravan Park is just over a mile away and gives you a decent base.

Weather dictates everything here. Windy days can make the coastal sections genuinely testing; spring and summer are more forgiving. The walk itself is free, obviously - it's a trail, not a ticketed attraction. Allow at least half a day if you're serious about it.
