Walk far enough into the woods near Malmesbury and you'll stumble across the L Strip - a proper forest track that cuts through some decent Wiltshire woodland. The L Strip itself is basically a long, open swathe through the trees, popular with locals for a straightforward forest walk without the crowds you'd get at the bigger attractions.

It works best for families who want their kids to burn off energy on a well-trodden path, or walkers after a quick leg-stretcher rather than a full expedition. The woodland's pleasant enough - typical English forest, nothing dramatic - and it's free to access. Give it 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how far you fancy going. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter.

Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm (1.4 miles closer) would give you a more relaxed evening after a walk here. The L Strip isn't the sort of spot that demands a whole day - it's more of a "quick leg-stretch between other things" proposition - but it does the job if you need green space without faffing about.
