The Lizard Chapel

The tiny chapel sits alone on the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall's southernmost point, and it's properly atmospheric. Built in the 15th century, it's a working church that feels genuinely remote - all granite walls and low ceilings, with just enough space for a couple of dozen worshippers. You'll find it tucked away in the hamlet of Church Cove, down from the main road towards Helston.

What strikes you most is the sheer isolation. Walk in and you're transported. The interior is simple - no grand Victorian fussing about, just solid stone, timber, and light streaming through small windows. There's real history here, but it doesn't feel museum-like. This is still a functioning parish church, which matters.

It's best suited to people who actually care about medieval architecture and don't need constant entertainment. You'll spend maybe twenty minutes inside, longer if you're into church monuments and details. If you've got restless kids, they'll get bored fast. But couples and older visitors interested in authentic Cornish history will find it worthwhile. The walk down from the car park is pleasant enough, nothing strenuous.
