The Lodge sits on the edge of Sandy, just east of Diss, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a rushed visit. This is the RSPB's headquarters, and the reserve itself spreads across 200 hectares of woodland, heathland and lakes - proper birdwatcher territory, though you don't need binoculars round your neck to enjoy it. The trails are well-marked and manageable for most abilities, with a visitor centre that gives you the lay of the land before you head out. Spring is exceptional if you're into migrating species, but honestly any season works if you want to escape the noise. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it steady. Families will find it less chaotic than some nature spots - there's space to breathe and kids can actually run about without causing mayhem. The admission fee gets you access to the grounds and centre, though you should check current rates before heading over. If you're based at Applewood Countryside Holidays or Arthur's Retreat Suffolk just down the road, The Lodge makes a cracking half-day addition to your Norfolk break. It's the kind of place that fills an afternoon without demanding much planning, and the woodland walking puts you in a better mood than you'd expect. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
