Thelnetham Windmill

Standing alone in the Norfolk countryside east of Diss, this restored windmill is a proper working museum that actually functions as it did two centuries ago. You climb up through the narrow wooden floors - a bit of a squeeze if you're broad-shouldered - to see the grinding machinery that still turns when conditions allow. The miller's quarters on the upper levels give you a genuine sense of what life was like for these workers: cramped, flour-dusted, and utterly dependent on the wind.

It's the kind of place history enthusiasts genuinely enjoy, while families with younger kids might find the novelty wears off after forty minutes or so. There's not much interpretation signage, so you'll get more from it if you already know a bit about milling or go on a guided tour when available. Allow an hour if you want to climb properly and absorb the details without rushing.
