The Maze & Underground Grotto

The Maze and Underground Grotto near Maidstone is one of those attractions that sounds far more dramatic than it actually is, but that's rather the point. You're getting a Victorian-era hedge maze above ground and a chalk grotto carved into the earth below - two experiences for the price of one, essentially.

The maze itself is decent fun if you've got kids in tow, though it won't keep them occupied for more than twenty minutes or so unless they're the type to deliberately get themselves lost repeatedly. The real draw is descending into the grotto. It's genuinely atmospheric down there - cool, slightly damp, and properly eerie in the way only underground spaces carved from raw chalk can be. The walls have that soft, almost organic quality that makes you understand why Victorians found grottoes so endlessly fascinating.

Walking-focused types might find it feels a touch underwhelming on its own. It's not a major undertaking. But if you're basing yourself at Go Glamp nearby and looking to fill an afternoon rather than commit to a full day out, it works perfectly. Maidstone's only a short drive away too, so you could easily combine it with something else.

The admission fee isn't steep - this is proper local attraction territory rather than some overblown heritage site. Bring a jumper though. That grotto stays cold year-round, and you'll be grateful for an extra layer even on warm days.
