The Mens Nature Reserve, Sussex Wildlife Trust

The Mens is a proper working woodland - 730 acres of it - and it's run by Sussex Wildlife Trust with the kind of hands-on conservation ethic that actually matters. You're walking through ancient woodland where they're actively managing the habitat, and you can feel it. The reserve sits just outside Pulborough and gives you something you don't get from most nature walks: a sense that the place is being cared for with purpose.

What you actually do here is walk. There are trails threading through the trees, past ancient oaks and through scrubland where you might spot deer or catch sight of birds. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no viewpoints or visitor centres trying to sell you something. Just woodland that feels properly alive. Early morning visits are best if you want to see wildlife; go at dusk and the light through the canopy is worth the muddy boots alone.

This suits walkers and bird watchers far more than casual strollers. Families with older kids who won't complain about uneven terrain will manage fine. If your lot expects a café and a gift shop, give it a miss. Entry is free, which is refreshing, and you can spend anywhere from an hour pottering about to half a day if you're methodical.
