The South Downs roll across Sussex like someone's crumpled a proper patchwork quilt and left it to settle. Walk up from Pulborough and you'll understand why people get sentimental about this landscape - chalk hills, ancient beech hangers, villages that look like they've been painted rather than built. It's all rolling grassland and ridge-top paths, the kind of walking that clears your head in about twenty minutes.

What you actually do depends entirely on your energy levels. Some visitors spend a full day tackling the ridge walks with proper maps and hiking boots. Others park near the edge, take an easy amble for an hour, and call it done. The views back towards the Weald are worth the walk, though they're not going to surprise anyone who's seen rolling hills before - they're just reliably, consistently good.

Histories types will appreciate the age of it all - Iron Age forts, Roman roads, medieval villages tucked into valleys. Families with younger kids will find gentler walks and spots for picnics without needing mountaineering experience. Serious walkers will be in heaven.

There's no entrance fee and no fixed opening hours - it's a national park, so you turn up when it suits you. The glamping spots nearby - Wakestone & Wild is barely two miles away, or head to Care Ashore on the Springbok Estate if you want a base that feels less Instagram and more genuinely outdoorsy. Aim for late morning in summer if you want to avoid the crowds, though honestly the Downs don't really get what you'd call packed.
