The Milton

The Milton is a Roman fort site just outside Crieff, and if you're expecting dramatic ruins, you'll want to reset your expectations. What you're looking at is essentially a grassy field with some earthwork bumps - the kind of thing that only makes sense once you know what you're standing on. The fort was built around AD 80 during the Roman occupation, and the defensive ditches and ramparts are still visible if you know where to look.

This one's for serious history types and anyone keen on Roman Scotland, not casual strollers looking for pretty views. You'll need a good imagination and probably some background reading to get the most from a visit. The site is essentially open access on public land, so there's no entrance fee or formal opening hours to worry about - you can rock up whenever. Allow 20 minutes to half an hour to walk the perimeter and take some photos.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Comrie Holiday Park, Twenty Shilling Wood, or Comrie Croft are all walking distance - makes sense if you're already exploring Roman Perthshire. The Antonine Wall runs through the region, and there are better-preserved forts elsewhere if The Milton doesn't quite grab you. That said, it's worth the short detour from Crieff if you're passing through and have a genuine interest in how the Romans controlled this part of Scotland. Don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed.
