The Nine Stones

A Bronze Age circle of nine standing stones sits on the chalky ridgeline above Portesham, easily reached on foot from the village. It's not dramatic - no Stonehenge moment here - but there's something properly atmospheric about walking out across the downland and finding these weathered sentries arranged just as they were three thousand years ago.

The stones themselves are modest, some barely waist-high, and arranged in a loose ring. On a clear day the views stretch across West Bay and towards the Chesil Beach, which alone makes the walk worthwhile. It takes twenty minutes or so to get up here from Portesham, following farm tracks and chalk paths through sheep pasture. The approach is gradual enough that kids won't complain, though the final stretch is a bit steep.

This works best for walkers and anyone with a genuine interest in archaeology - casual visitors might find themselves asking "what now?" after ten minutes. It's free and accessible year-round, though winter can be muddy underfoot. There's no facility here at all, so bring water and sensible boots.

Combine it with exploring Portesham village itself, which has decent pubs and sits right on walking routes toward Abbotsbury and beyond. The landscape around here is genuinely worth your time - the stones are the excuse to get out into it.
