The Paddock

The Paddock sits just outside Banchory and does exactly what it says on the tin - it's a proper nature reserve where you can actually see things rather than just walk in circles hoping something interesting happens. Wetland habitat, woodland paths, the usual suspects for Scottish reserves, but the appeal here is straightforward: it's close to town, it won't swallow your entire afternoon, and the birdwatching is decent if you time it right.

This is one for people who want a gentle walk without the pretence. Families with younger kids get the most from it - there's enough to keep them occupied for an hour or two without requiring serious stamina or navigation skills. Serious nature enthusiasts might find it a bit modest compared to larger reserves, but that's not really the point. The point is it's there, it's free to access, and it breaks up a caravan park holiday nicely.

If you're staying at Banchory Lodge Caravan Park - which you probably are, given it's practically on your doorstep - you can do this before lunch. Same goes for Silverbank just a mile away. Even from Feughside further out, it's worth the short drive. Bring binoculars if you've got them, wear decent shoes because it can be boggy after rain, and don't expect dramatic views or dramatic anything really. Just a quiet corner of Aberdeenshire where you can stretch your legs and spot a few mallards. That's enough.
