The Parish Church of St Nicholas

St Nicholas Church sits on the edge of Grimston, a modest Norfolk village where the building itself is far more interesting than its surroundings suggest. The church dates back to the 12th century, and stepping inside reveals a proper medieval interior - high ceilings, original stonework, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget the A47 exists a few miles away.

The real draw here is the architecture. The chancel is uncommonly fine for such a small parish, and if you're into Norman work or Victorian restoration, there's enough detail to keep you occupied for a solid half-hour. The churchyard is peaceful rather than spectacular - old graves, a few yews, the sort of place where you'll be alone most days.

It's not a destination in itself, frankly. You won't travel an hour to see it. But if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - Happy Valley Woodland is barely two miles away, or Norfolk Woods Resort if you want something more upmarket - then it's absolutely worth a morning wander. Pair it with a walk through the surrounding lanes or a pint in the village, and you've got a proper Norfolk half-day.

Grimston is quiet, which some people love and others find dull. The church rewards those who stop to look properly. Bring a camera if you're into architectural photography; leave the children behind if they can't sit still for ten minutes.
