The Pimple

A steep walk up a grassy knoll near Tavistock rewards you with views that stretch across Dartmoor's moorland - it's the kind of spot where you suddenly understand why people move to Devon. The Pimple itself is modest, a cone-shaped hill that locals clearly named with dry humour, but the vista from the top justifies the climb.

It's not a long walk - twenty minutes or so - but it's brisk enough that you'll feel you've earned your view. The terrain is open moorland, so there's nowhere to hide from wind or weather. Pick a clear day if you can. You won't find cafes or facilities up here, just grass, sky, and the kind of silence that makes you remember why you came to Devon in the first place.

Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine. It's not technical, just properly steep in places. If you're staying at Langstone Manor or Woodovis - both just a couple of miles away - this is an easy half-hour excursion that breaks up a park-based holiday nicely. You're looking at free admission, naturally, since it's just moorland.

Worth the detour if you're in Tavistock anyway. Don't expect a destination in itself - expect a proper Dartmoor moment that costs nothing and takes barely an hour from your accommodation. On a good day, it's exactly what a moorland walk should be.
