The Priest House

This timber-framed medieval house sits right in the heart of East Grinstead like a relic someone forgot to move. Built in the 1400s, it's the real deal - creaking floorboards, wonky walls, the lot. You're walking through actual history here, not some polished recreation.

Inside, the rooms are furnished as they would have been centuries ago, which does give you a proper sense of how cramped and dark domestic life actually was. The kitchen particularly shows you what you'd be dealing with - no mod cons, obviously, and everything built around the fire. It's the sort of place that makes you grateful for central heating.

Historically minded visitors will find it worthwhile, especially anyone interested in how ordinary medieval people lived beyond the castles and cathedrals. Kids under about eight might find it a bit slow, but older children who engage with history will get something from it. You're not looking at a full day here - an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough.

It works well as a stop-off while based at Hook Farm Campsite, which is practically on the doorstep, or as part of a broader East Grinstead wander. Worth Forest Glamping and Wild Boar Wood are also close enough that you could tack this onto a park stay without much faffing about. Nothing spectacular, but if you're serious about medieval Surrey, it's worth the trip. Check ahead though - opening hours can be a bit unpredictable with places this small.
