The Round Church

Cambridge's Round Church is one of only four of its kind in England, and that alone makes the walk into the city centre worth the effort. Built in the 1130s, it's a proper bit of medieval oddity - a circular nave with a later rectangular chancel tacked on, which looks stranger than you'd expect. The inside is fairly austere, all Romanesque arches and pale stone, though the light through the windows does something rather nice to the space.

It's genuinely interesting if you're into religious architecture or medieval history. Kids will find it a bit plain unless they're already keen on old buildings. Most people spend twenty minutes here, perhaps thirty if you read the information boards. Free entry, which is a bonus.

The location is brilliant for a caravan-based Cambridge stay. You're within walking distance of the Backs and the colleges if you fancy a proper wander, but the Round Church itself sits on Bridge Street, quiet enough that you won't feel overwhelmed. The nearest campsites are Cherry Hinton and the Camping Club site, both under three miles out, so you can base yourself there and pop in without faffing about with parking in the city. Check opening hours before you go - it does close for services and sometimes locks up unexpectedly. Combines well with the Fitzwilliam Museum and the college gardens if you're doing a cultural Cambridge day.
