Sounds niche, and it is, but there's something genuinely moving about watching the water cascade down in that particular way, especially if you time it right and spot actual fish making the journey.

This is really for the walking crowd rather than casual day-trippers. The Salmon Ladder itself takes five minutes to look at properly, but it makes a brilliant waypoint on a longer Thames Path walk - say, between Henley and Hurley. History types will appreciate the Victorian ingenuity of it all; kids might find it mildly interesting for ten minutes before asking what's next. Winter and early spring are the best times if you want to actually see salmon attempting the ascent. Summer is quieter and the light's better for photos. The surrounding area is classically Home Counties Thames - meadows, willows, weirs. If you're camped at Swiss Farm or Henley Four Oaks, you're barely a mile away, which makes it an easy morning walk. Don't go out of your way solely for the Salmon Ladder itself, but if you're exploring the river corridor around Henley, absolutely include it. It's honest and unpretentious - everything a riverside attraction should be.
