The Shallows

The Shallows is a proper woodland walk just outside York, the sort of place that feels like a proper escape without actually going anywhere far. It's a forest patch where you can lose an hour or two wandering under canopy, following what paths there are through mature trees and watching the light filter through. The walk itself is gentle - no steep climbs, no scrambling - which makes it ideal if you've got younger kids in tow or just want something straightforward after a morning exploring York's city walls.

What you get here is peace, mostly. The woodland floor does its thing - moss, leaf litter, the occasional fallen log - and in spring it can be quite lovely with bluebells if you time it right. It's not dramatic or showy. There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, just trees and quiet. That's rather the point.
