The Spinney

A woodland walk through The Spinney near Dunmow feels like stepping into proper Essex countryside - the kind of place where you half-expect to bump into a pheasant mid-path. This is a modest forest patch, nothing dramatic, but it's genuinely pleasant if you're after a break from campsite life and don't fancy driving miles for a proper woodland adventure.

The main draw is simplicity itself: quiet paths that wind through mixed woodland, some open glades, and enough green to remind you why you came to the countryside in the first place. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend five hours here unless you're taking an awful lot of photos - but as a morning stroll while based at Dairymeade Farm Glamping or Hill Farm campsite, it works well. Kids will manage the paths easily enough; there's nothing too technical or steep. The forest floor is manageable year-round, though winter can get muddy in patches.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water. The real strength here is proximity to your accommodation - close enough for a gentle leg-stretch without faffing about with navigation. Families staying locally might combine this with other walks in the area rather than treating it as a standalone trip. Go early on weekends if you want solitude; the paths do get some use from dog walkers and local runners. It's the sort of place that's genuinely useful to a holiday, if not Instagram-worthy.
