The Spinney

The Spinney is a proper woodland patch just outside Nottingham - the sort of place locals know about but casual visitors often miss. You're walking through mature deciduous trees, some of them genuinely ancient, with the forest floor thick enough that you feel properly separated from the road noise despite being minutes from the city.

It's brilliant for a brisk woodland walk without needing to commit to a full afternoon. The paths are well-trodden and easy to follow, though it gets muddy after rain - waterproof boots are non-negotiable. The whole circuit takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and how often you stop to look at things.

This appeals most to walkers wanting a quick nature fix and families with school-age kids who'll enjoy spotting birds and scrambling over fallen logs. Older visitors will find it manageable; it's not strenuous. Dog owners come here regularly and the space feels genuinely lived-in because of that.

If you're staying at New Hall Farm just down the road, it's an excellent way to fill a morning between breakfast and lunch. You won't see anything you couldn't see in fifty other British woodlands, but that's not really the point. Sometimes you just want trees, birdsong, and fresh air without the Instagram queue. The Spinney delivers that without fuss.
