Byron's Oak stands as a reminder that Lord Byron once roamed these parts, while Newstead Abbey - his ancestral home - remains the star attraction.

The forest itself is the real draw. Center Parcs has claimed a chunk of it, but there's plenty left to explore. Sherwood Pines offers proper walking and cycling trails without the theme park atmosphere. You'll find The Druid Stone tucked away in the woods - an ancient archaeological site that predates Robin Hood by centuries.

Newstead Abbey deserves a full afternoon. Byron's former home sits in stunning grounds, complete with Boatswain's Grave where the poet buried his beloved dog. The gardens alone are worth the trip, especially around Upper Lake.

Getting here is straightforward enough - you're about 15 miles north of Nottingham city centre, easily reached via the A60. The villages have that slightly forgotten feel that makes them perfect for a quiet break. Ramsdale Golf Centre keeps the sporty types happy, while Strawberry Hill Heath nature reserve offers gentler pursuits.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into Nottingham for a proper night out, but far enough away to feel like you've escaped. The forest location means you can walk straight out into proper countryside from most sites - something you can't do from a city centre hotel.
