The Stonehaven Land Train

A little train potters along the seafront at Stonehaven, and it's one of those attractions that works brilliantly if you've got restless kids or simply fancy a break from walking. The Land Train trundles past the harbour, giving decent views of the coastline without requiring you to actually use your legs - which matters more than you'd think when you're midway through a caravan holiday.

It's proper seaside entertainment, the sort of thing that takes maybe 20 minutes and costs a few quid. You'll see the working harbour, the beach, and on a clear day the cliffs stretching away. Not groundbreaking, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Families with young children get the most from it; teenagers will find it twee within minutes.

The best bit? It connects directly to Stonehaven's actual attractions - the castle ruins, the ice cream shops, the chip stands. Jump off and explore properly afterwards. If you're staying at Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's basically on your doorstep - you could do this on a lazy afternoon when the weather's not brilliant enough for serious walking. Upper Crawton Park and Cloak Caravan Park are close enough that it's worth factoring in too.

Timing-wise, aim for late afternoon when the light's best and crowds thin out. It's free admission to the seafront itself, though the train ride does cost. Check opening hours locally - coastal attractions like this tend to close off-season.
