The Studio Gallery

The Studio Gallery sits in the Buckinghamshire countryside just outside Windsor, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a working artist's space where you can actually see creators at their benches, which beats the sterile feeling of many formal galleries hands down.

What you get depends entirely on who's exhibiting when you visit - this isn't a permanent collection of Old Masters. Instead, local and regional artists rotate through, so one month it might be ceramics and printmaking, the next watercolours or sculpture. The gallery itself is intimate enough that you won't spend hours here, which is fine. Most people get through it in 30 to 45 minutes, tops.

It works brilliantly if you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby - Wyatts Covert is practically on your doorstep at under three miles away. If you're doing the family caravan thing in the area, this is a decent cultural pause between Windsor's crowds and countryside walks. Older kids and teenagers with any artistic leanings might find it interesting; younger children could get restless quickly unless something really grabs them visually.

I'd ring ahead to check what's on and whether there's an admission charge before making the trip - details are thin on the ground online. It's worth the detour if the current exhibition appeals to you, but don't go out of your way expecting a major day out. That said, if you catch it on the right day with work that genuinely excites you, it's a proper highlight.
