The Tongue

The Tongue is a proper fell walk in the northern Fells, rising to 2,213 feet and offering views across the Lake District that most tourists miss entirely. It's not the kind of peak that gets crowded - the approach from Wigton is straightforward enough, though you'll need decent navigation and legs that can handle the climb. The name fits: it's a distinctive shape, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Solway Firth and into Scotland.

This is walkers' territory, not a casual stroll. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on your fitness, and bring a map - there's no fancy signposting once you're on the fell. The summit itself rewards you with space and solitude, which is increasingly rare in the Lake District these days. It's the kind of walk that appeals to people who actually want a bit of effort without the artifice of a visitor centre. Families with young children would struggle; teenagers who can hike will love it.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Threlkeld Hall or Carrock Glamping Pods are closest at under four miles - The Tongue makes a cracking full-day outing. It's free, naturally. Go midweek and avoid school holidays if you want the fell to yourself. The weather can turn quickly up here, so check conditions before you set out. It's worth the detour if you're serious about walking; if you're expecting a gentle ramble with views, look elsewhere.
