The Vat Run

The Vat Run near Dunfermline is a woodland walk that cuts through a narrow gorge carved by the River Ore, and it's genuinely one of those places that feels wilder than you'd expect within striking distance of a proper town. The path winds along the water's edge with high rocky walls pressing in on either side - nothing dramatic, but atmospheric enough that you'll forget you're in Fife.

It's a straightforward out-and-back walk, taking maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on how slowly you move and whether you stop to poke about the rocks. The gorge itself is the main event: water trickles past, mossy boulders sit in the streambed, and the trees overhead create that closed-in feeling that makes woodland walks actually interesting instead of just flat rambling. Kids won't find it boring - there's a burn to splash in and rocks to climb on, though watch smaller ones near the water.

The whole thing is free, and you can start whenever suits you. Go in autumn or after heavy rain when the water's moving properly; summer can feel a bit drained and underwhelming. Park near Dunfermline and allow an hour and a half if you're not in a rush.

It pairs well with a stay at Green Oak Nature Retreat or Linwater Caravan Park nearby - both excellent spots - giving you a proper walk without needing to drive far. The Vat Run won't take your whole day, but it's exactly the sort of thing that justifies a park holiday in the area rather than just sitting on the caravan.
