Thistley Gorse Covert

Walking into Thistley Gorse Covert near Warwick, you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. This small woodland sits tucked away from the main roads, offering the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - unusual for somewhere so close to a town.

It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured park. The paths wind through mixed woodland with gorse (hence the name) and plenty of native trees. Nothing spectacular or dramatic, but genuinely peaceful. You'll spot birds, the occasional muntjac deer if you're lucky, and in spring the undergrowth comes alive with bluebells and wood anemones.

For families with younger kids, it's a solid hour's ramble at most. Older children who like exploring will find it more engaging than a flat park circuit. History buffs won't find much beyond the woodland itself - this is about the walk, not a heritage visit. If you're staying at Green Gates or The Apple Farm just down the road, it's worth the short drive for a morning or afternoon stretch of the legs.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here, so come prepared. Free access, no obvious barriers or notices suggesting otherwise. Go when it's not been raining heavily - the paths can get boggy. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best chance of spotting wildlife and avoiding other walkers.

It won't be the highlight of a Warwickshire holiday, but as a gentle woodland break between bigger attractions, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
