Thorndon Country Park North

Thorndon Country Park North sprawls across proper Essex countryside just east of Billericay, and it's the sort of place that rewards an afternoon of gentle wandering rather than rushing through. You get woodland trails threading between ancient oaks, open grassland that's genuinely pleasant for a picnic, and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other visitors even on a sunny weekend.

Walkers will find the most to do here - there's enough footpaths to keep you occupied for a good two hours if you're not racing through. The park has that slightly wild feel that older parks sometimes hold onto, where paths aren't too manicured and you actually spot wildlife instead of just hoping to. Families with younger kids might find an hour or so does it, unless they're the type to spend ages turning over logs and hunting insects.

It's free to access, which means no palaver with car park fees or entrance gates. Bring wellies though if there's been rain - parts get boggy. Spring is lovely here when the woodland floor comes alive, but summer's when the grassland proper opens up.

If you're staying at Barleylands Campsite five miles away, this is a solid addition to your park itinerary without being a pilgrimage. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what a country park should be - straightforward, genuine, and genuinely good for clearing your head.
