Thynghowe

A Bronze Age burial mound sits quietly in the Nottinghamshire countryside near Mansfield, largely overlooked by the crowds heading to Sherwood Forest. Thynghowe is what archaeologists call a barrow - an ancient earthwork raised over someone important enough to warrant the effort of hauling soil and stone, probably sometime between 2000 and 1500 BC. You won't find visitor facilities, interpretive boards, or any fuss. What you get is a modest grassy hump in the landscape and the genuine satisfaction of standing on something genuinely old.

For history types, it's worth the detour. Walkers might find it a bit anticlimactic on its own - you're looking at a mound, and unless you're genuinely interested in Bronze Age burial practices, thirty minutes covers it. Families with young children may find it underwhelming compared to the forest walks nearby. The site's real value sits in context: if you're staying at one of the Sherwood Forest holiday parks, or basing yourself near Clumber Park, Thynghowe works as a brief stop that adds genuine archaeological weight to a weekend in the area.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you should check locally for any seasonal closures. Allow an hour if you're coming specifically; less if you're passing through. Best visited on a clear day - the mound reads better visually when the light's decent. Don't expect crowds or commercialisation. That's rather the point.
