Tilekiln Wood

The walk into Tilekiln Wood from Appleby-in-Westmorland rewards you with something you won't find in many Cumbrian forests - proper beech and oak woodland that feels almost southern England in character. It's a smaller wood, nothing sprawling, but that's rather the point. You get the best of it in a couple of hours without the usual forest fatigue.

The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy in places even weeks after rain. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic in decent numbers, and the canopy in summer keeps things cool on warmer days. Autumn is probably when it earns its keep though - those beeches turn a proper show of bronze and gold.

Families with young legs will find it manageable; the terrain doesn't demand much technical skill, just a willingness to splash through the occasional puddle. Walkers heading out from nearby Wild Rose Holiday Park will appreciate it as a morning jaunt rather than a full day commitment. History buffs won't find dramatic ruins or plaques here - it's about the woodland itself, the way the light falls through the leaves, the small streams cutting through the undergrowth.

No facilities that we could identify, so bring water and snacks. The wood appears to be freely accessible, though it's worth checking locally in Appleby before you head out. In winter, muddy conditions make boots essential. It's unpretentious woodland, the kind of place you visit because you want a walk in trees, not because you've heard it mentioned in three guidebooks.
