Deep woodland floors carpeted in beech leaves - that's what you're after at Tilekiln Wood, a proper slice of ancient forest sitting just outside Hitchin. The place feels genuinely old, with mature trees creating a cathedral-like atmosphere that makes you forget you're barely five miles from town.

It's a walker's wood, really. There are tracks that wind through the canopy, nothing too challenging, but you'll want decent boots because it gets muddy fast after rain. The main appeal is the quiet - no visitor centre, no facilities, just trees and birdsong. You could spend an hour here easily, longer if you're the type to sit on a fallen log and sketch or photograph. Kids will enjoy it for twenty minutes before they start asking for snacks.

Where it shines is as a break between other activities. If you're staying at Radwell Lake campsite - a solid 4-star spot just down the road - you can pop here for a morning ramble before heading into Hitchin proper for lunch. It's free, naturally, since there's nowhere to pay. Go mid-week if you can. Weekends bring Hitchin families, which rather defeats the purpose of coming to woodland for peace.

The wood's best in spring when the bluebells come through, but honestly, any season works if you just want clean air and a break from screens. Not spectacular, but proper restorative.
