Tilly Whim Caves

The caves themselves are tucked into the cliffs just outside Swanage, carved out over centuries by quarrymen hunting for Purbeck stone rather than any natural geological drama. You're looking at man-made caverns - industrial archaeology really - which sounds dull until you actually stand inside them and realise the sheer graft that went into hacking these passages out of solid rock by hand.

Access is straightforward enough: there's a coastal path that brings you right to the entrance, and it's free to poke around. The caves don't take long - thirty minutes maximum if you're thorough - but they're genuinely atmospheric. Narrow passages, low ceilings in places, and enough history soaked into the walls to keep anyone interested in industrial heritage happy. Kids tend to find the spelunking aspect entertaining for a bit, though it won't keep them occupied for hours.

Timing-wise, go when the tide's out and the light's decent - you'll want to see what you're doing in there. Summer afternoons work best. It's worth combining with a proper clifftop walk along the coast path, which is far more rewarding than the caves alone.

If you're staying at Swanage Bay View or Ulwell, this is essentially your backyard. It's a decent addon to a seaside holiday rather than a reason to visit Swanage in itself, but it beats another ice cream run into town.
