Tobruk Plantation

Tobruk Plantation is a proper forest walk just outside Shrewsbury, and it's the sort of place that rewards you with decent woodland trails without requiring a major expedition. The plantation itself is a managed forest - not ancient woodland, but it does the job well enough if you want to get among the trees for an hour or two. You'll find a mix of conifers and broadleaves, which means it's reasonably pleasant year-round, though autumn walking here is genuinely worth timing your visit for.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are straightforward enough that you won't need a map, though they can get a bit muddy after rain. It's not challenging terrain - more of a steady amble than a proper hike. Families with younger kids might manage a shorter loop without complaint, but there's not much here beyond the trees themselves. No visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. Bring a flask if you're planning to linger.

The main draw is the escape from Shrewsbury's suburban sprawl. It's close enough to Beaconsfield Holiday Park and Sunnyside Farm Caravan Park for a morning walk if you're based at either, though honestly you'd want to combine it with other activities in the area rather than make it your sole destination. Two hours is about right for a decent wander. Free to access, and worth the short drive from town if the weather's decent and you fancy some greenery.
