Toll Wood

The woodland floor at Toll Wood is thick with leaf litter and moss - proper soft underfoot. This stretch of forest sits just outside Faversham and offers the kind of quiet woodland walk that doesn't require a plan or a map, which is exactly what makes it worth visiting. The trees are tall enough to block out the sky, and in winter especially, you get real silence between the trunks.

It's straightforward walking country. No dramatic viewpoints or visitor centres, just paths threading through established woodland where you can lose the best part of an hour without trying. Local dog walkers clearly know the place well, and families won't struggle with terrain, though it's muddy after rain - worth knowing if you're in trainers. The forest floor changes character through the seasons. Spring brings bluebells thick enough to look almost violet from a distance. Autumn's when the whole place feels properly atmospheric.

Free access and no obvious opening hours mean you can slip in and out as suits you.
