Toll Wood

The forest here feels different depending on the season. I walked it in autumn and the canopy was thick enough that you'd miss the first turning if you weren't paying attention. Toll Wood is a proper working forest - not some manicured country estate kind of place, but actual commercial woodland with trails carved through it.

The walks are straightforward enough, though the paths get muddy fast after rain. I'd allow a solid couple of hours if you're doing the longer loop, or forty minutes for the shorter circuit. Families with younger walkers should stick to the main track - the side paths can be boggy and a bit of a slog. The forest itself is the draw rather than any specific feature or viewpoint. There's something meditative about being among the trees, and it's genuinely quiet.

You'll pass through sections of mature woodland alongside younger plantations, which gives you a sense of how these forests are managed. The lack of "facilities" is refreshing - bring your own coffee, wear proper boots, don't expect a visitor centre. Dunblane is just a few miles away if you need a proper cuppa afterwards.

Nearby, Craighead Howf holiday park makes a decent base for exploring the broader Perthshire area. Toll Wood works best as part of a walking day rather than as a standalone destination - pair it with other forest walks in the region if you've got the time. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't reroute your holiday specially.
