Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum

The Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum sits in a village that most people drive straight through on the way to somewhere else. But stop, and you'll find yourself reading about one of the strangest footnotes in British labour history. In 1834, six agricultural labourers from this tiny Dorset hamlet were arrested, convicted, and transported to Australia simply for trying to form a friendly society - essentially an early trade union. It's a proper miscarriage of justice, and the museum tells their story without melodrama.

The space itself is modest, housed in a cottage-museum format typical of rural Dorset. You won't spend hours here - budget 45 minutes to an hour - but it's the kind of place that sticks with you. The documents and artefacts show what their crime actually was, and why their transportation sparked massive protest rallies back in London. History teachers and anyone interested in social movements will find plenty to chew on. Families with younger kids might find it a bit text-heavy, though the narrative arc is gripping enough.
