Tonbridge Castle

The gatehouse looms up unexpectedly as you round the corner into Tonbridge's High Street - a proper Norman keep that's been standing since 1066, when William the Conqueror's lot decided this spot above the River Medway was worth fortifying. Walk through and you're inside a castle that actually feels like one, not some overly manicured heritage attraction. The keep itself is the main draw. Climb the spiral stairs and the views across town justify the slightly tight squeeze up the stone steps. The outer bailey and walls give you a genuine sense of medieval military layout, the sort of thing that clicks into place when you're standing in it rather than reading about it.

Historia enthusiasts and anyone with kids old enough to manage stairs will get proper value here. There's enough to poke about in for an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. It's free admission, which helps - you're not obliged to spend ages to justify the cost. The castle works brilliantly as a midweek stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. Apple Acres is barely a mile away, and Glamping at Honnington Farm even closer. You could easily combine it with a wander round Tunbridge Wells town centre, which is only a few miles south.

Go on a quieter weekday morning if possible. Summer weekends can feel a bit rammed with school groups. The stonework's weathered nicely - no Disney restoration nonsense here. It's proper English castle, full stop.
