Toot Hill

The highest point in Cambridgeshire is hardly a dramatic peak - at 128 metres, Toot Hill sits just south of Royston and feels more like a gentle swell than a proper summit. You won't find dramatic views or a sense of arrival here. What you get instead is a modest walk across farmland that rewards you with perhaps the widest views across the Fens, particularly when the light's right.

It's the kind of place that appeals to local walkers and families wanting a straightforward ramble rather than anything that will leave you breathless. The climb itself takes maybe twenty minutes from the nearby road, and there's a trig point at the top if you're ticking off high points. Honestly, it's a bit of a non-event as summits go - don't expect a cairn or a proper summit marker, just fields and a gentle roll in the landscape.

Timing-wise, you're looking at an hour all-in if you're leisurely about it, less if you're just bagging the height. Go on a clear day, because murky Fenland air makes the whole thing feel pointless. The surrounding area works better as part of a broader holiday - nearby Royston has some decent chalk hills worth exploring if you're keen on higher ground. From Shepreth Mill Caravan Park or Highfield Farm Touring Park, it's barely half an hour's drive, making it a sensible morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's not worth planning a trip around, but if you're already in the area and fancy a walk, it'll do.
