Torness Nuclear Power Station

The white concrete towers of Torness rise from the Lothian coastline like something from a sci-fi film, and whether you find that beautiful or slightly unnerving rather depends on your view of nuclear energy. This functional behemoth sits on the cliffs near Dunbar, generating power for half a million homes, and it's one of those landscapes that makes you stop and look properly.

You can't tour inside - it's an active power station, not a visitor attraction in the traditional sense - but the exterior is visible from the surrounding roads and coastal paths. The sheer scale is what gets you. The geometry. The engineering audacity of planting something this enormous on a clifftop. Some people find it utterly compelling; others would rather photograph the fishing villages nearby.

Walkers and industrial enthusiasts will get the most from it. If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park - a solid spot just 5.7 miles away - you could build a morning walk that includes a view of the station from the coastal route, maybe continue to Dunbar's old harbour, then head back. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a wider East Lothian coastal ramble, it works. The Borders countryside around here offers proper walking territory if you want something less grey and functional afterwards.

Best in decent weather when the sea reflects light off those towers. Don't expect visitor facilities or explanations. Just turn up, look, and move on.
