Tower Hill

Tower Hill rises just outside Salisbury and gives you proper views across the Wiltshire chalk downs if the weather plays ball. It's a modest peak by most standards - you're not scrambling up a mountainside - but the walk up rewards you with sight lines that stretch for miles when visibility is decent.

The ascent takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and it's straightforward enough that families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog on a hot day. The summit itself is windswept and open, which means the views aren't obscured but also that there's nowhere to shelter if it turns nasty. On a clear afternoon you can see why people bothered walking up here at all.

This works well as a half-day jaunt if you're staying at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road. Pair it with a wander around Salisbury's cathedral quarter afterwards and you've got a decent morning sorted. If you're after something less energetic, the yurts at Adhurst or The Meadow's glamping offer a different pace entirely, though both are worth the short drive from here.

Go early if possible - the car park fills up on weekends and there's not much shade once you're up top. Bring water. The walk itself is free, as are the views, which makes it excellent value even if you're only stopping for twenty minutes.
