Townend Wood

The woodland around Townend, just outside Driffield, is one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-off-the-list visit. It's manageable woodland - nothing dramatic or vast - but solid walking territory with decent paths and enough cover to feel like you've actually escaped into something green and quiet.

You're looking at mixed woodland here, the sort where you'll spot beech and oak alongside younger growth. The ground underfoot varies from well-trodden path to a bit boggy after rain, so decent shoes aren't a luxury. A good two-hour loop takes you through without feeling rushed, though you could easily spend longer if you're the sort who stops to look at things.

Walkers will get the most from Townend. It's not a destination in itself - no tea shop, no visitor centre, no car park as far as anyone can tell - but as part of a wider Driffield area ramble it works nicely. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on the excitement stakes; there's no water feature or obvious play value. Older children who actually like walking, though, will do fine.

If you're based at Seaways Glamping or Wolds Glamping Pods nearby, this is your closest proper woodland. Free to access, naturally. Spring's the best time - you get the light through the canopy before the trees fully leaf up. Go mid-week if you can; weekends bring the usual dog-walker traffic.
