Traeth Clarach

The beach at Clarach curves away north of Aberystwyth in a proper sweep of sand and shingle that feels genuinely removed from the town's hustle. You get here by heading out past the caravan parks - Clarach Bay Holiday Village sits practically on the sand - and suddenly you're looking at a wide, open stretch of Welsh coastline that doesn't feel overrun even in summer.

It's a working beach in the best sense. Serious walkers use it as part of longer coastal routes. Families with younger children find it manageable - the slope's gentle enough, and there's enough sand to occupy them for hours if the tide's out. The cliffs behind hold a bit of geological interest if you care about that sort of thing, though they're not the showstopper formations you'll see elsewhere along Cardigan Bay.

The real draw is the space and relative quiet. You won't find arcades or ice-cream vans. Come in autumn or early spring and you might have stretches entirely to yourself. High summer gets busier because of the holiday parks right there, but it never feels cramped like Aberystwyth's main beach can.

Access is straightforward - park at Clarach Bay or walk from the town itself, which takes about twenty minutes. No facilities that I saw, so bring what you need. It works well as a morning stop if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks, or as a quieter alternative to Aberystwyth's seafront if you want something with a bit more breathing room.
