Traeth Crigyll

Rocky headlands frame this wide sandy bay just south of Rhosneigr, where local families come to escape the crowds that flock to Anglesey's better-known beaches. The sand here is proper golden stuff, backed by low dunes that provide some shelter on blustery days.

Families with young children will appreciate how the beach slopes gently into relatively calm waters, though the usual Welsh coast caveats apply about checking tides and conditions. Dog walkers seem to have claimed this as their patch - expect plenty of four-legged company, especially early morning and evening.

What sets Traeth Crigyll apart is the rock pooling at low tide. The headlands on either side reveal decent collections of crabs, anemones and the odd starfish, keeping kids entertained for ages. Parking can be a bit hit-and-miss during summer - there's a small area near the beach access, but arrive early or risk a longer walk.

It's well positioned for a holiday based around Rhosneigr, with several caravan parks like Silver Bay Holiday Park and Trewan Sands within easy reach. The beach works best as part of a longer coastal walk or combined with a trip to nearby Rhosneigr's cafes. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning serious rock pooling with the family.
