You'll find yourself in proper woodland within spitting distance of Porthcawl - which is handy if you're staying at Trecco Bay and fancy escaping the caravan parks for an hour. Trafalgar Wood is straightforward stuff: dense forest with trails threading through, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of the amusement arcades.It's genuinely quiet, which is the main appeal. The trees are tall enough to make you forget you're in South Wales' industrial belt, and in autumn the whole thing turns bronze and gold. Walking through takes maybe 45 minutes depending on which route you pick, so it's not a half-day commitment - more of a morning stroll when the weather's decent.Families with younger kids will manage it fine; there's nothing steep or technical. Older children who enjoy spotting wildlife might get a kick out of it. History buffs probably won't find much to chew on - it's just a wood, no hidden ruins or ancient settlements that I could find. Dog walkers absolutely love this place, which tells you something.What it isn't: Instagram-famous or particularly dramatic. No vast vistas, no waterfalls, no café at the end. It's simply a working forest where locals go to clear their heads. Combined with a chip supper back in Porthcawl and a day at the beach, it rounds out a decent seaside break without any fuss.
