Tump Plantation

You'll find yourself walking through a proper working forest just outside Malmesbury - Tump Plantation is the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss entirely. It's a managed woodland with good tree cover and decent walking trails that meander between conifers and mixed woodland, the kind of spot where you can actually breathe in that deep forest air without crowds.

The main appeal is straightforward: peaceful woodland walking. There are no dramatic viewpoints or heritage buildings, just decent paths through the trees and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little you get it elsewhere. Most people spend between one and two hours here - enough time to clear your head without feeling like you've committed your whole afternoon. The forest floor can be damp and muddy after rain, so proper boots matter.

This works brilliantly as a half-day break from campsite life at either Cirencester Park or Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm. It's close enough to Malmesbury that you could easily combine it with a walk around town or a pub lunch, but feels genuinely removed from things. Families with young children might find it a bit samey - there's no playground or specific features to hold attention - but teenagers and serious walkers will appreciate the genuine peace. Worth the detour if you're based in the area and want to stretch your legs without faffing about with car journeys.
