Turbury Plantation

Deep in Powys, a short drive from Montgomery, Turbury Plantation offers proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at bigger forests. It's a working plantation - larch and conifer mostly - rather than some manicured nature reserve, which means the paths can be a touch muddy and the landscape feels genuine. You'll find yourself among tall trees with decent shade, good for a couple of hours of forest bathing if that's your thing, though don't expect dramatic views or limestone cliffs.

Families with young kids will manage fine if you pick the easier routes, but older children or keen walkers should give it at least two hours to feel they've had a proper outing. The real appeal here is the peace - you won't be dodging mountain bikers or crowds of school groups. It's the sort of place you go to clear your head rather than tick off a bucket list.

If you're staying at one of the nearby pods or glamping sites - Camlad Valley Luxury Pods and Mellington Hall are closest - Turbury slots in nicely as a half-day excursion before or after exploring Montgomery itself. The town has its own medieval castle ruins worth a wander. No visitor facilities to speak of, so pack water and snacks. Free access, though check locally for any seasonal restrictions. Spring and early summer are best; winter can be waterlogged.
