Cantlin Stone and Botfield Cross

Two ancient stones standing alone on the Powys moorland near Craven Arms - that's what Cantlin Stone and Botfield Cross are, and they're properly absorbing if you're into that sort of thing. The stones mark an old route through Mid Wales, and there's something about standing next to them that makes the landscape suddenly feel very old indeed.

You won't need long here - twenty minutes maximum - but it's worth the detour if you're already walking in the area. The stones themselves are modest compared to famous stone circles, which is actually rather nice. No crowds, no ropes, just you and the wind and whatever history these things are keeping to themselves.

Historically minded visitors will get more from this than casual walkers, though the moorland walk to reach them has its own appeal. The approach is straightforward enough, though it can be boggy depending on rainfall. Bring proper boots and check the weather - this isn't sheltered terrain.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Camlad Valley Luxury Pods or Offa's Pitch Glamping are both roughly four miles away - this makes a decent half-morning outing combined with walking the broader moorland. It pairs well with exploring the Shropshire Hills proper. Don't expect facilities or signage out here; this is the Welsh borderland doing its thing without fuss. Free to visit, naturally. Go when the light's decent rather than on grey days, when the whole experience becomes rather bleak.
