The woodland around Turnbeck doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. Near Leyburn in North Yorkshire, this is proper forest walking country - the kind of place where you're genuinely alone with the trees and the occasional cry of a wood pigeon.

It's a working woodland, which means there's character to it. The forest floor shifts from bouncy moss to proper boggy in places, so decent boots are essential rather than optional.

This suits walkers and anyone after a couple of hours of proper woodland immersion rather than families wanting a quick loop and an ice cream. Spring and autumn are best - summer can get muddy and claustrophobic, winter occasionally impassable. Allow two to three hours depending on how lost you're willing to get, which is part of the appeal.

It's a solid addition to a longer North Yorkshire Dales trip.
